Frequently Asked Questions
What is ScreeneX®?
ScreeneX® is a technology and a line of products developed by OSG based on embedded screens in glass units. The idea behind ScreeneX® is to use existing glass units which are common in almost all aspects of life (transportation vehicles, glass walls and other glass elements) as digital signage venues.
At OSG, we have developed a full range of technologies to enable the embedding process. Our products are slim and fully integrated. They also meet all standards that the specific glass element is required to meet.
Who is OSG?
OSG is a veteran glass fabricator. We are focused on three main markets: transportation, special applications and transparent armor.
In transportation, we support customers in the automotive, bus and rail sectors. We serve both OEM’s, tier 1 companies and the aftermarket. Our focus is on glazing systems with added value. We have broad expertise in bending, unique glass solutions and design and manufacture of support systems including frames and gaskets.
In special applications, we are focused on new technologies. Here we leverage our expertise and ability to deliver unique and innovative solutions in a range of fields. These include solar energy, smart glass and ScreeneX®.
In transparent armor, we were one of the first companies to introduce bullet proof windows in the 1990’s. Since then, we have developed a broad range of additional transparent armored products. We are currently one of the leading transparent armor manufacturers in the world serving hundreds of military and security customers.
OSG has two glass fabrication facilities in Israel and a glass fabrication facility in the US. We also have a metal fabrication facility in the US. Our global marketing network includes offices in the US and Germany.
What products do you offer for the transportation market?
For the transportation market, we offer on-board and off-board solutions (our ScreeneX® TRN product line). Our on-board solutions include products designed to be installed on-board public transportation vehicles including busses and trains of every type. For the off-board market, we provide glass-based solutions with embedded screens including Passenger Screen Doors (PSD).
What products do you offer for on-board applications?
We currently focus on inward-facing screens. Our products are based on existing glass elements such as side-windows and glass partitions (wind-screens). ScreeneX® TRN 21 is our standard 21” product which offers a 16:9 aspect ratio FHD LCD TFT screen fully embedded inside a window or partition. Our ScreeneX® TRN 38 offers an extra-wide screen to be implemented primarily in side windows.
Is ScreeneX® certified for trains?
Yes. ScreeneX® TRN 21 has been tested and certified to meet EN 50155 (rolling stock electronics), EN 45545 (fire and smoke- EU), NFPA 130 (fire and smoke -US), CE and other industry standards.
Is ScreeneX® can be implemented in any screen or bus?
Yes. ScreeneX® was designed for easy installation. Typically, the integration process is done by our integration and design team together with the client’s engineers. As a leading glass fabricator, we are able to produce glass units that meet all of the specifications of any original glass unit. ScreeneX® can be implemented at the OEM stage, or as a retrofit for most public transportation vehicles.
What components make up a typical ScreeneX® system?
A ScreeneX® system includes two basic modules: the window screen (WS) and the electronic control unit (ECU). The WS comprises the glazing unit with the embedded screen. The WS also includes sensors and the display cable, which is the cable that connects the WS to the ECU. The ECU is an electronic enclosure containing the electronic components of the system. These may include power supply, screen controller, system controller, led drivers and other elements.
How do you design the window screen?
OSG can supply glass to any specification. This includes glass compositions for a broad range of requirements, and ballistic glass. Typically, we produce a glass that is bonded using the same bonding method as the original glass unit. All ScreeneX® window screens are insulated glass units (IGU), also referred to as double-glazed units. As a result, in some cases we need to redesign the frame and/or glazing brackets. This is done by our team of engineers and designers. ScreeneX® solutions can be combined with any glass type, including reflective glass, anti-vandal solutions, low-e glass and others.
What media options does the electronic control unit (ECU) include?
The ECU comes in two basic configurations: M-series and X-series. In the M-series, the system is configured as a slaved monitor. In this configuration, ScreeneX® receives video input from an external source (stand-alone or vehicle PC). In the X-series, the ECU includes a SBC (per client specification) than can run content management software with independent internet connectivity.
Is there a limit on the distance between the electronic control unit (ECU) and the window screen?
Yes. Currently the limit is 1500mm between the ECU and WS. The display cable exit point can be designed per integration restrictions. The type of cable used for the display cable can also be specified per project requirements.
What kind of screen displays do you use?
For our ScreeneX® TRN products we use high quality industrial grade LCD TFT panels. We choose our panels carefully and test them thoroughly. For other applications we may use OLED panels, e-paper and other screen technologies. We typically design our own back-light system, as well as supporting mechanical and thermal systems, to ensure reliability and durability.
How can I arrange a Pilot Project?
Many operators or clients wish to test the system before installing it widely. We believe that a real product installed on your vehicle is the best way to experience the advantages ScreeneX® can offer to you and your passengers. Our team will work closely with you to define and execute a pilot project in a relatively short period of time. Contact us for further information.
Is ScreeneX® a smart window?
The term “smart window” commonly refers to various glass applications. Typically, smart windows include switchable glass technologies, inclusion of a screen or a combination of both. Unlike other smart window solutions that are conceptual only, ScreeneX® is tested and available today. It is the first real application that offers embedded screens inside windows. We are also able to combine our ScreeneX® products with our switchable glass PDLC technology to offer a more dynamic and versatile smart window. We are continually working on the development of the next generation of smart windows to include additional features including transparent screens, dimmable and switchable glass and new capabilities.
Does the system require regular maintenance?
No. the ScreeneX® system (WS and ECU) are completely fan-less and do not require regular maintenance. Moreover, one of the advantages of ScreeneX® is that it is fully integrated inside a glass unit. This means that cleaning ScreeneX® is as simple as cleaning any regular glass window, and significantly easier than cleaning a large metal housing or traditional PIS screen.
If there is a defect, how do we replace the system?
In the event of a malfunction, OSG’s field diagnosis kit can be used to determine the problem type and origin. The ECU and WS are fully independent, so replacing one does not require replacing the other. If the issue is in the ECU, it can be easily replaced and sent for lab testing. If there is a critical issue in the WS, it can also be replaced. WS swap-out is similar in time and methodology to replacing a standard window. In some cases, the WS can be repaired at an OSG-certified lab.
What support will I receive from the OSG’s ScreeneX® team?
OSG will support you at every step. Our marketing staff will help you understand the advantages of ScreeneX® and assist you in building a case for ScreeneX® at your company. Our engineering team will also support you throughout system design, including interfaces and implementing the overall solution. And our integration team will guide you during installation and service of the systems. You will also receive detailed installation manuals and support.
What warranty is available for ScreeneX® products?
